The EFVS is the name given to\u00a0<\/strong><strong>the incorporation of an EVS (Enhanced\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Vision System) image on an HUD (Head\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Up Display).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The system frequently found on higher-end aircraft is a new feature\u00a0in one more ways than one. It was designed and developed by Rockwell\u00a0Collins. Our system is in part composed of the HGS3500, a HUD system\u00a0used in the Legacy family and one of the most compact systems on the\u00a0market. It directly displays the most important flight information in the\u00a0pilot\u2019s visual field and unlike traditional systems is not made up of a projector\u00a0and a display system but rather is an all-in-one information display system.\u00a0The reduced complexity, weight and volume allows it to be integrated in\u00a0the \u201cmid\u201d and mid-light\u201d aircraft, which is a first for these segments.\u00a0The device also includes the EVS-3000 system composed of 3 cameras that\u00a0provide clear images of the visual field at the front of the aircraft on the\u00a0HUD and on the engine-indicating and crew-alerting system (EICAS)\u00a0screen. The system functions regardless of the conditions, whether in rain\u00a0storms or low visibility (fog).\u00a0This new EVS has increased detection capacities of runway lighting systems\u00a0using short-wave infrared and visible frequencies, as well as, technically\u00a0challenging, LED lighting and sources of incandescent and halogen lighting\u00a0(which in the context may cause glare for the pilot). The component uses\u00a0electronic processing to represent an image surpassing the human eye.\u00a0Moreover the system is the most light-weight and compact on the market.\u00a0Since 2004, the FAA has allowed certain operators using the system to\u00a0begin an approach regardless of the minimum RVR (Runway Visual\u00a0Range) in line with the published approach minima. Pilots could continue\u00a0their approach until 100 ft if the environment and the runway were visible \u00a0using the <em>EFVS<\/em> then could proceed beyond that if they could see\u00a0the runway without the system. EASA\u2019s EU-OPS European regulation\u00a0issued in 2008 authorized the same benefits to operators reducing the\u00a0RVR conditions needed to start an approach by a third with <em>EFVS<\/em>\u00a0equipment with the same requirement to have a visual at 100 feet from\u00a0the ground.\u00a0Since mid-March, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and the\u00a0ANAC (Brazilian civil aviation agency) approved the right to continue\u00a0the approach within 100 feet using the EVS image on the HUD with\u00a0for the moment a limit of 300m\/1000ft of RVR to begin the approach.\u00a0They also allowed the <em>EFVS<\/em> to be used to perform category II and\u00a0III approaches to be continued until landing. The system has therefore\u00a0revolutionized approaches in bad weather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IN FLIGHT WITH THE SYSTEM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our Legacy 500, registered PT-ZEY, is the test aircraft used in the development\u00a0of the program. After take-off, we head north of Gaviao\u00a0Peixoto which allows me to learn about the selections and fine-tune\u00a0the system settings. We display the EVS image on the HUD on my\u00a0left with the same EVS image displayed on my right on a half screen\u00a0associated with the Primary Flight Display. \u00a0The modes are selected using the CCD (Cursor\u00a0Control Device) just like using a computer mouse and\u00a0the brightness settings are selected directly on the\u00a0HUD platform.\u00a0We quickly arrive to the zone and descend to 3,500ft\/\u00a0ground in this hilly region that has almost no lights. I can\u00a0clearly distinguish the ground and contours of the\u00a0terrain. The images in green tones displayed on the\u00a0HUD provide an excellent rendering of the ground\u00a0characteristics and are overset with the flight information\u00a0providing me with a focused visual channel.\u00a0The system ergonomics and in particular the simplicity\u00a0of the image display, using a button on the side-stick,\u00a0provides an optimal use of the <em>EFVS<\/em>. After around 20\u00a0minutes of circling the hills to view the system images,\u00a0we head back for two approaches. On the first, we can\u00a0clearly distinguish the contours of the runway despite\u00a0the fact that the runway lights were switched off and\u00a0the lack of moonlight. The \u201cde-clutter\u201d mode helps me\u00a0to only see the information needed for the approach\u00a0on the HUD and we descend to 100 ft where I switch\u00a0to \u201cview\u201d and, with no visibility since the lights are\u00a0switched off, we once again hit the gas. On our second\u00a0approach, with the runway lights switched on, we\u00a0continue under 100 ft with the system and the EVS\u00a0image in the HUD offers welcome assistance for the\u00a0landing.\u00a0The <em>EFVS<\/em> system undoubtedly is a game changer\u00a0for approaches in low visibility. Given the capacities\u00a0of the system, its simplicity and how easy it is to use,\u00a0in addition to the fact that it avoids the inconveniences\u00a0of category 2 and 3 approaches \u2013 ground with fully\u00a0compatible means of approach, equipped aircraft, trained\u00a0crew \u2013 the choice of installing the system on this type\u00a0of aircraft segment will allow clients improved access\u00a0to \u201csmaller airfields\u201d.\u00a0Especially those located in mountainous regions or\u00a0prone to low visibility conditions that are not equipped\u00a0with the necessary airfield equipment or infrastructure.\u00a0Without a doubt, this system will soon become an\u00a0important selling feature with the major promise of\u00a0improving flight safety around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Source: ULTIMATEJET<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":30,"featured_media":29963,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-29956","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-aircharter"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
