Bombardier\u2019s first production\u00a0Global 8000\u00a0<\/a>made its inaugural flight on May 16 from Toronto Pearson International Airport (CYYZ). The ultra-long-range twinjet will soon undergo completions at Bombardier\u2019s Laurent Beaudoin Completion Centre in Montreal in preparation for service entry in the second half of this year.<\/p>\n

Bombardier pilot Sandro Novelli was at the controls of the Global 8000, along with copilot Charlie Honey and flight engineer Bhargav Bhavsar. \u201cThe systems and aircraft performed as expected\u201d during the flight, according to Bombardier.<\/p>\n

With a maximum range of 8,000 nm, the Global 8000<\/a> is an evolution of the Global 7500<\/a>. The newest flagship in the Global family has a top speed of Mach 0.94 and \u201cultra\u201d high-speed cruise of Mach 0.92, which allows faster flights for up to 4,200 nm. Normal high-speed cruise is Mach 0.90, and \u201ctypical\u201d cruise speed is Mach 0.85. Power is provided by two 18,920-pound-thrust GE Passport turbofans.<\/p>\n

The Global 8000 <\/a>\u2019s 54-foot 5-inch-long cabin has the longest seated length size in its class, the company said, as well as a cabin altitude of 2,900 feet above FL410, and it can be configured with four living spaces and a separate crew rest area. Sea level takeoff distance is 5,760 feet, and landing distance is 2,220 feet. Maximum operating altitude is FL510.<\/p>\n

With fly-by-wire flight controls, the Global 8000<\/a>\u2019s flight deck is equipped with a Collins Aerospace-based Global Vision avionics suite. Features include four large displays, head-up display with combined vision system (simultaneous overlay of enhanced vision and synthetic vision system imagery), and MultiScan weather radar with windshear detection.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving this first production aircraft take to the skies is another important step in this journey that will redefine the business aviation landscape,\u201d said Bombardier senior v-p of engineering and product development Stephen McCullough. \u201cWith its low cabin altitude, luxurious and healthy cabin, signature smooth ride, and unparalleled performance capabilities, the Global 8000 is the clear choice for discerning owners and operators who prioritize convenience and flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bombardierdelivered its 150th\u00a0Global 7500<\/a> ultra-long-range business jet to an undisclosed customer in September. The fleet has amassed 100,000 flight hours since service entry in December 2018. The aircraft has also set 20 speed\/distance records, including an 8,225-nautical-mile October 2019 flight from Sydney to Detroit. Bombardier claims the Global 7500<\/a> has a dispatch reliability rate of 99.8 percent.<\/p>\n

The Global 7500<\/a> features a \u201csmooth flex wing\u201d that reduces drag, fuel burn, and turbulence; a three- or four-zone passenger cabin with the Lufthansa nice Touch cabin management system, Nuage zero-gravity single executive seats, and Soleil lighting designed with circadian rhythm\u2013based technology to combat jet lag; a large galley; and a dedicated crew suite.<\/p>\n

The galley can be equipped with multiple ovens, including a double convection\/microwave and a convection\/steam model. The redesigned crew rest area is larger than the ones on earlier models. The aft lav in the rear cabin en suite can be fitted with a steam shower, and passengers can access the capacious 195-cubic-foot baggage hold at any altitude. The Global 7500<\/a> comes standard with Bombardier\u2019s Wave satcom (the Honeywell JetWave system that runs on Inmarsat\u2019s Ka-band satellite network). The cockpit features computerized fly-by-wire controls with sidestick inputs and the Global Vision flight deck built around Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics.<\/p>\n

The 8000 Introduces Improvements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In 2022, Bombardier announced a revised version of the aircraft,<\/a> the $81 million Global 8000<\/a>. It remains under development and \u201con track,\u201d according to the airframer, which plans for it to enter service in the second half of 2025. The program\u2019s lone test vehicle has flown more than 150 hours backed by 1,000 hours of ground rigging tests. The Global 8000\u2019s top speed is Mach 0.94, thanks largely to a software change to its GE Passport engines that enables them to deliver more thrust. The engines\u00a0are based on the guts of the high-efficiency CFM Leap models being developed for new-generation Airbuses and Boeings. Among the technologies incorporated into the engines is a 52-inch titanium \u201cblisk,\u201d a single forging of the fan blades and disk that saves weight and reduces vibration.<\/p>\n

The Global 8000<\/a>‘s cockpit features computerized fly-by-wire controls.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

During flight testing in 2021, the aircraft exceeded Mach 1 in a shallow dive. As a result of fuel-storage optimization, the range increases from 7,700 to 8,000 nautical miles (with eight passengers and four crew, cruising at Mach 0.85). The aircraft also adds advanced HEPA cabin air filtering. Overall dimensions are unchanged from the Global 7500<\/a>, and the Global 8000<\/a> operators will be able to upgrade their aircraft to Global 8000<\/a> configuration via a service bulletin for a modification and calibration process that will take approximately one week, according to Bombardier. Both the Global 7500<\/a> and 8000 use the same fuselage cross-section as their legacy predecessors (six feet, two inches tall, and eight feet wide) but they stretch it by 11 feet to provide 2,637 cubic feet of cabin space.<\/p>\n

Like its predecessor, the Global 8000<\/a> features a three- or four-zone passenger cabin with the Lufthansa nice Touch cabin management system, Nuage zero-gravity single executive seats, and Soleil lighting.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Global 8000<\/a>\u2019s main advantage over Gulfstream\u2019s competing G800, which that airframer plans to certify in 2024, is a slight increase in top speed (Mach 0.94 for the Global versus 0.935 for the Gulfstream) and a cabin that is nearly eight feet longer. However, the Gulfstream\u2019s cabin is an inch taller and two inches wider than the Global\u2019s, which is six feet two inches tall and eight feet wide. At maximum takeoff weight, the Global can also use runways that are a few hundred feet shorter than the G800 can employ (preliminary specifications only). The Global 8000<\/a> also boasts a very low cabin altitude\u2014just 2,900 feet while the aircraft is at 41,000 feet.<\/p>\n

The Manufacturer\u2019s Brighter Outlook<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A few years ago, Bombardier skirted perilously close to bankruptcy, largely due to massive debt onboarded over a decade used to finance the development of its CSeries airliner program (since sold to Airbus and rechristened the A220). In 2020, the debacle prompted the\u00a0Montreal Gazette\u00a0<\/em>to run a story headlined, \u201cWhat went wrong at Bombardier? Everything.\u201d However, CEO and president Eric Martel said the company has more than 200 \u201corder options\u201d from large operators of Challenger and Global aircraft, with Global 7500<\/a> and 8000 models accounting for nearly half the total. He said the company \u201chas set a solid foundation for its future,\u201d adding that the company has no plans to sell any additional assets to pay down debt.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re on a nice path,\u201d Martel said in October. \u201cWe\u2019ve been reducing the debt by more than half so far and still, you know, have a bit of work to do, but I think [we\u2019re headed] in the right direction.\u201d Martel rejoined Bombardier in 2020 after serving for five years as CEO of Hydro-Quebec. Before that, had headed Bombardier\u2019s business aircraft, customer services, and specialized aircraft divisions. An electrical engineer by training, he is known throughout the industry as a problem solver.<\/p>\n

Bombardier is moving to further bolster customer confidence via the launch of its new\u00a0Smart Services Elite maintenance plan. Paul Sislian, Bombardier executive vice president of aftermarket support and strategy, called the plan \u201cthe most comprehensive cost-per-hour program on the market bar none.\u201d It consolidates the current Smart Services program into a single offering with a single invoice that the company says \u201celiminates all the confusion\u201d of menu-driven plans.<\/p>\n

While the equipment incorporated in the Global 8000<\/a> is complex, therefore, taking care of it should be relatively easy.<\/p>\n
