Magrini noted the importance of having accurate, up-to-date information in areas such as airports. \u201cWe all realize that we cannot follow 28-day cycles in modern days. With airport data, we are now talking about near real-time information about the availability of these airports.\u201d\u00a0Information that is a day or two old can be outdated, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s no surprise that we get\u00a0some information updates\u00a0on airport closures for example, from Twitter quicker than from the notams,\u201d he said, stressing a need for \u201cinformation that you can trust\u201d and update\u00a0quickly.\u00a0This is true for other information such as visa, permit, and other requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot rely anymore on pen and paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shay Har-Noy, general manager of space-based flight and weather data provider Spire Aviation, stressed the importance of adding data that\u00a0is useful, reliable, current, and actionable. \u201cIf you&#8217;re missing any one of those <div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"width:calc( 100% + 0px ) !important;max-width:calc( 100% + 0px ) !important;margin-left: calc(-0px \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-0px \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column fusion-flex-align-self-flex-start fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:0px;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-spacing-right-medium:0px;--awb-spacing-left-medium:0px;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-spacing-right-small:0px;--awb-spacing-left-small:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\">[qualities], you&#8217;re back to pen and paper and\u00a0logbooks,\u201d Har-Noy said.\u00a0While conceding that pen and paper \u201chave kept pilots alive for the last a hundred years\u2026so let&#8217;s not throw them out,\u201d he added, \u201cwe can do better. We should strive to do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ad-inject-after\">Paul Cremer, who leads the charter team for global business aviation services provider Gama Aviation, agreed and said there are four key data areas Gama requires as an operator: aviation management, flight-planning software, notams, and tracking.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad-unit-injected-1542053188808-0\" class=\"hide-for-print ad-unit-injected AIN_Mid_Content\">\n<div class=\"ad-inject-native\" data-container-ad-unit-id=\"\/10971483\/AIN_Mid_Content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt is imperative data is accurate and up to date, and that it can be trusted and validated,\u201d Cremer said. Gama also needs to be able to demonstrate to its clients that the data comes from an official source.<\/p>\n<p>He echoed concerns that notams are often not correct, noting that its air ambulance in Scotland will frequently get calls from small island airport operators saying they are done for the day, are going home, and will be on\u00a0call. \u201cThere is no notam that tells you that information,\u201d he said. But he also stressed that when receiving data, \u201cit needs to be [from] a validated source. We can&#8217;t be on approach to an airport with some information that&#8217;s come in via the internet that is not substantiated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Marich, founder and global strategy director for aviation asset and spend management service provider MySky, said companies can build trust in data through transparency and independence to conduct verification. Marich also noted the need to have complete datasets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big thing is being able to backtest information that you have,\u201d added Har-Noy. He noted that his company has ADS-B data going back to 2017. \u201cNow with hundreds of millions of points of records&#8230;putting that at people&#8217;s fingertips is something that&#8217;s really powerful because now it allows you to backtest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This enables an operator to examine things such as fuel savings and decisions that could be made differently. \u201cSo now going forward, you have more trust in those models,\u201d he said, adding that he believes \u201cthe days of data snacking are rapidly coming to a close\u201d and that companies will look at fuller sets of data.<\/p>\n<p>Magrini also underscored the need to work collaboratively. Recognizing that some information may be held closely for proprietary reasons, he added, \u201cThat&#8217;s something that we\u00a0as data providers are really pushing forward.&#187; He noted that his company has seen some resistance\u00a0but said, &#171;I think that&#8217;s one of the major objectives of the next years is if we can get that message across to say, &#8216;Look, please share it,&#8217; because there is no benefit in data retention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Har-Noy agreed. \u201cYour file\u00a0folders are where data goes to die,&#187; he said.\u00a0&#171;The question is, can you digitize that? Can you make it accessible? If you can share it, you can reap the benefits of it.\u00a0There&#8217;s a culture of default to closed rather than default to open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Magrini also cited \u201cnetwork effects\u201d that come from sharing data for the benefit of the customer. For example, customers who make a trip request may have to wait for a dozen or so operators to ask all the same questions. That could be resolved through data sharing.
