Bombardier Global 6500

The Global 6500 is a twin-engine, large-category business jet that is produced by Canadian manufacturer Bombardier. Part of the company’s Global series of business jets, the Global 6500’s first flight took place on Jan. 31, 2018.   Following the completion of its flight-test program, the Global 6500—which, along with the Global Express and Global 6000, is based on the BD-700-1A10 type— received type certification from Transport Canada in the third quarter of 2019. From a design perspective, the Global 6500 is an upgraded version of the Global 6000 which offers improvements that include Rolls-Royce’s Pearl 15 engine and aerodynamic changes to the wing.   The Global 6500 can accommodate a maximum of 19 passengers in addition to the two required crew. Those passengers are accommodated in a cabin that has a length of 43 ft. 3 in.— measured from the cockpit divider to the “aft most” portion of the cabin, excluding the airframe’s baggage compartment—width of 7 ft. 11 in. and height of 6 ft. 2 in., with that width promoted as being the “widest in class.” Flight crews operate the Global 6500 using Bombardier’s Vision flight deck, which includes “four large displays” and is able to be equipped with a combined vision system (CVS) that integrates the enhanced and synthetic vision system “images in a single view.”   Rolls-Royce’s Pearl 15 engine is described as being purpose-built to power the Global 6500 and able to produce 15,125 lbf. of thrust, which is flat rated to 15°C above standard. The improved aerodynamics of the Pearl 15’s core are touted as allowing the engine to both produce more power and be more efficient, while the aerodynamic improvements made to the Global 6500’s wing included reprofiling the

Gulfstream G600 gets certification

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has handed Gulfstream the production and type certificates needed for deliveries of the Gulfstream G600 aircraft to begin. Whilst the type certificate confirms that the aircraft complies with aviation safety regulations, the production certificate is only given to an aircraft once the manufacturer demonstrates that its quality management systems and manufacturing processes meet FAA standards in the Gulfstream G600. “These rigorous and thorough certification processes ensure we deliver a first-rate aircraft that exceeds expectations,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream. We can’t wait to put the newest member of our aircraft family — one that spectacularly combines performance, efficiency, technology and comfort that are second to none — into the hands of our worldwide customers.” The Gulfstream G600 becomes the third Gulfstream aircraft to receive its production and type certificates on the same day. The first was the Gulfstream G550 in 2003 followed by the Gulfstream G500 in 2018. The G500 and Gulfstream G600 were both launched on the same day in 2014, with Gulfstream surprising the world by having the prototype Gulfstream G500 taxi into view at the unveiling under its own power. The G600 is unofficially the replacement for Gulfstream’s 600+ selling G550. Gulfstream says that the dual certification clears the way for deliveries to begin to customers as per the company’s schedule this year. Announced customers for the Gulfstream G600 include Qatar Executive. The Doha-based operator placed a $1.5 billion order with Gulfstream in 2015 for a 30-aircraft mixture of G500s, Gulfstream G600s and G650ERs.

Cuba Limited in Aircraft Mx, but Opens Door for Incoming Support

Four years after the rules for travel between the U.S. and Cuba began to relax, aircraft repair services still remain in short supply in the island nation. But the easing of rules in recent years facilitates bringing in parts, mechanics, or other supplies to support aircraft that encounter AOG situations in Cuba, said Eric Norber, founder of Cuba Handling. When the U.S. opened the door to travel to Cuba, the ability to repair aircraft in country was a chief concern. “There is not a lot of local mechanics or repair shops available in Cuba,” said Norber. “But, knowing that, Cuban authorities put in place in a policy that opens the door for whatever support you need you can bring in. It’s just at the expense of the operator.” With the policy changes, he added, “There is no customs process. There’s no immigration for mechanics. It is really open access for the support or repair of any AOG aircraft in Cuba.” On the U.S. side, the removal of Cuba from the list of nations with certain export bans in 2016 eased the ability to bring in parts and equipment necessary for support. Cuba Cuba Handling, which has specialized in Cuban operations handling for more than 27 years, has assisted aircraft operators with issues as small as tire changes and to as large as an engine swap, he said, adding the latter being on an airline airframe. All were completed on the ramp in Cuba by U.S. mechanics. Norber cautioned that travel logistics, such as hotels and transportation, must be arranged through a handling company. Al Maktoum Airport to become a ‘cosmic super-port’

Al Maktoum Airport Al Maktoum Airport is to be reinvented as an aviation hub that can handle supersonic, hypersonic and even space planes in addition to aircraft. Steve Nichols reports. The announcement, made in June, is part of the Dubai 10X initiative, with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects working on the project in partnership with Dubai Future Foundation (DFF). This means DWC is to become a “multi-mode super-port” with the hub set to become the region’s first spaceport, with the surrounding aviation infrastructure being known as Al Maktoum Airport a “cosmotropolis”. Al Maktoum Airport will become the first of its kind in the world to provide an integrated travel outlet for both air and space travel. According to the Government of Dubai’s website, the initiative, part of a total of 26, was approved by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, crown prince of Dubai and chairman of the board of trustees of the DFF. Khalifa Suhail Al Zaffin, executive chairman of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, said: “The advent of new travel technologies, such as supersonic aircraft and space travel, have raised questions about the ability of existing airports to accommodate these modes of travel in an integrated way using Al Maktoum Airport. “As the most ambitious country in the field of exploratory space missions, we believe the time is right to develop a new comprehensive plan for an integrated airport that offers both air and space travel.” Al Zaffin added: “The Dubai 10X initiative has helped us make great strides. Five Saudi female pilots take to the skies

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has recently issued five licenses for Saudi female pilots, permitting them to work as pilots on Saudi Arabian Airlines aircraft, reports abouther.com. It was only this July that women in Saudi Arabia were finally allowed to enroll in flights schools, following the rescinding of a decades-long ban on female motorists that came into effect this summer. The issuance of pilot licenses to Saudi women is seen as part of the country's overall efforts and specifically of the GACA's commitment to empower Saudi women to work in the aviation sector, which is one of the objectives of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This year, the Oxford Aviation Academy, a trainer and crew recruiter, received applications from hundreds of women in Saudi Arabia hoping to start lessons in September at its branch in Dammam. Bombardier Adds Two More Globals to Family

Global 5500 and Global 6500 Two new additions to Bombardier’s Global family were unveiled on the eve of EBACE: the Global 5500 and 6500. The flight test aircraft is making a surprise appearance here powered by a new family of engines from Rolls-Royce, the Pearl, developed under cover and certified secretly in February. The Global 5500 and 6500 take the current Global 5000 and 6000, respectively, and boost their speed and performance with new engines and a wing with a re-profiled trailing edge. Range with eight passengers at standard cruise of Mach 0.85 is extended by 500 nm, but by as much as 1,300 nm from hot-and-high locations such as Toluca, Mexico, to 5,700 and 6,600 nm, respectively. Mmo is Mach 0.90. The aircraft will be produced on the same line as the Global 5000 and 6000, which will continue to be available. The four models will offer mission, capability and price points to appeal to different customer requirements. First deliveries are planned by the end of next year. The Global 5500/6500 Rockwell Collins flight deck is the first to seamlessly merge infrared and synthetic images into a single view, Bombardier says. Advanced weather radar detection, real-time air traffic information, and improved airport moving maps are all incorporated in the latest evolution of the Bombardier Vision Flight Deck.
